I have been working for the charity Action for Neurodiversity since 2022, seeing clients online who either have an ASD diagnosis, or live with someone who has. I work with people who are at the higher functioning end of the continuum, also known as Asperger’s Syndrome, and also see clients face to face in private practice.
When clients learn to like themselves life gets a lot easier because they are not struggling against the one thing they can’t change – who they are. Often I hear that a diagnosis has been helpful, particularly in later life, making sense of behaviours which up to then have been puzzling and confusing.
I see clients as a unique human being, with their own combination of strengths and weaknesses. I celebrate their strengths and help them accept or manage their weaknesses, with humour and appreciation. I get to know and like them for exactly who they are, accepting them, with all their sensitivities, needs, communications and energy challenges.
Some of the areas my ASD clients have explored include:
- Relationships
- Hoarding
- Executive functioning
- Self worth
- Communications skills
- Anxiety
- Autistic Meltdowns and Burnout
